The Fitler
Square Improvement Association
(text by George Malcomson)
Incorporated
in 1962, the Fitler Square Improvement Association grew
out of the efforts of many individual residents in the
area working independently on the upkeep of the park.
The
founder of the Association, Marie Wilson, tirelessly
took on the responsibility for the major overhaul that
was needed. New walkways replaced the cracked--and in
many areas missing--cement. Trees and sod suddenly appeared
where only bare earth had existed. Shrubs and flowers
bloomed in beds that had formerly been home to broken
bottles and accumulated trash. And the park began to
change from a neighborhood eyesore into a pleasant oasis
where residents--old and new alike--could enjoy a unique
community garden area in the heart of an urban neighborhood.
Today
the Association has grown to more than 300 members.
The membership, working with Philadelphia's Department
of Recreation, underwrites the cost of major park improvements
and takes an active role in the planting and preservation
activities needed to improve its appearance.
Association
funds provide for professional care for the trees and
grass areas, planting of seasonal flowers, replacing
shrubs, installation and care of a sprinkler system,
general maintenance, custodial supervision, an annual
Christmas tree lighting ceremony with gifts for neighborhood
children, and an Easter Egg Hunt. A trust fund has also
been established for the Square.
The
Association gets its support from membership dues and
the proceeds from the annual Spring Fair. If you are
not now a member, we urge you to join with us in this
worthwhile endeavor.
