Annual Events in Fitler Square
by Tony DeAnnuntis
On most days
Fitler Square is a quiet refuge from the noise and activity
of urban life. But several times each year the Square
is itself a hub of activity. Highlights include the Easter
Egg Hunt, the Spring Fair, the Halloween Party, and the
Christmas Tree Lighting, The Square also provides its
neighbors with a Farmer's Market
that runs from mid-May to early November.
The annual
Easter Egg Hunt helps the neighborhood greet the Spring
with expansive displays of the flowers of the season,
refreshments for all, and a tradition that children
can enjoy - BYOB (bring your own basket). Children are
invited to bring their own baskets to
collect candy, colored eggs, and prizes.
The Spring
Fair includes a white elephant booth, book sale, and plant sale.
Outside vendors rent space around the perimeter of the square
for a vibrant flea market. There are games, music, and entertainment.
There is plenty of food, including hot dogs and a bake sale,
as well as yummy vegetarian options. Proceeds from the Spring Fair provide
revenue for the maintenance of the park as well as funds for
the other annual events such as the Christmas Tree Lighting,
Easter Egg Hunt, and Halloween Party.

The annual
Christmas Tree Lighting is especially favoured by children
of all ages, and brings neighbors together for cider,
cookies and cakes, caroling, and a visit by a very busy
Saint Nick.
